Lecture Almila Akdag (UVA)

A theoretical view on the nature of (high/low) art and the art market, and its relation to online art communities. Almila Akdag, from the University of Amsterdam, has received a Veni awardfrom NWO to conduct her own research for 3 years. The project is a combination of the application of various scientific methodologies (mostly social network analysis and analysis of image archives). In this lecture she will talk about DeviantArt, an online community of artists and art appreciators, that plays a nowadays role of the Salon des Refuses. She will show the history of this initiative and highlight its social and organizational structure as well as its impact on the art education for the next generation of artists.

Subtitle Kino (Färgfabriken)

http://www.fargfabriken.se

August 18-19, 2012

Across one weekend in August, Australian contemporary art initiative BUS Projects will collaborate with Färgfabriken to present an international mobile cinema and contemporary art performance space. Making use of a parked van converted into a mobile event space, SOUTH/SÖDER is curated by Jared Davis and will present a new performative, video and sound-based work in the public site of Liljeholmstorget.

This project draws from an ongoing series of mobile contemporary art and performance events initiated by BUS Projects, that have seen works presented in public sites in Melbourne (State of Design Festival, 2011), Athens (ReMap3, 2011) and Sydney (SafARI, 2012).

For SOUTH/SÖDER, Australian-Latvian artist Emile Zile will exhibit for the first time in Sweden, continuing his work in the area of cinema as a social space, media archeology and live expanded cinema. Zile will present a new cinema-based audiovisual performance that will use three versions of the King Kong story (1933, 1976, 2005) to create a compressed re-telling of this famed cinematic narrative. Extracting separate subtitle tracks from the three feature films and recombining them within one frame, this is a formal observation of the mutations and re-animations of the same storyline in different epochs. The soundtracks of the three films will be mixed live by the artist during the performance. Zile will make use of the Swedish subtitle tracks of the films.

Checklist

On December 9 I will leave Melbourne to begin a year at the Rijksakademie (or longer, depending on the funding situation in Holland).

Four weeks to have lasagna at Pellegrinis, float in the ocean at Point Lonsdale, have a beer with Marcos, paint mum’s fence, visit Sam Bear for socks and survival gear, eat stretched zataar from Mankoushé, find office rooftops, make an Oxo Ovo video, learn the Melbourne shuffle, eat spanakopita from Le Bon, watch Ancient Aliens with Bob in the forest, write a script, eat an ‘everything’-bagel from Glicks, throw away old band tshirts, work on my melanomas, eat a bbq pork roll from Nhu Lan. Not to mention Open Archive, Warneet Ngargee, BYOB Melbourne

Review of ‘Five Production Company Logos in 3D’ by Urszula Dawkins in Realtime 103

http://www.realtimearts.net/article/103/10353

Philip Brophy, in his catalogue essay for Five Production Company Logos in 3D, sees Emile Zile’s groin-level gesturing aptly as a ‘spoof’ on masturbatory corporate excess. It strikes me also as a kind of post-mass-media shadow-puppetry, almost as though Zile might be telling us a story around the campfire, his flickering hands casting the shape of mythical battles or god-heroes onto thin air.

Philip Brophy on ‘Five Production Company Logos in 3D’

My new video Five Production Company Logos in 3D is showing in Melbourne at Dianne Tanzer gallery + projects in April 2011. Philip Brophy wrote a catalogue essay available at the show or online at PhilipBrophy_EgoLogos.html

An excerpt…

Emile Zile’s Five Production Company Logos In 3D presents an imaginary ‘real man’ behind these grandiose charades born of selfimportant declaration. Just as design company CEOs probably come in their pants when they look at their Maya-rendered fonts casting shadows on planets, so are Emile’s hands ‘working magic’ as he performs aerial jack-offs synchronised to Adam Milburn’s gilded melodic refrains. His hysterical hand movements hilariously replicate the excessive overload of those corporate logos which move around like Jane Fonda doing Zumba on crack. Best of all, it simply looks like Emile is masturbating as if he uses some amazing technique to whack a super load into our faces. Which is exactly what the proud designers of those gleaming chromed star-cruiser logo-ships imagine they’re doing. And a grand tradition it is, for what is Coke’s ‘dynamic ribbon’ but the allusion to a frothy foaming cum shot.

Saturday 23rd October 2010, 8 p.m.

Kerameikou 28 str., Kerameikos – Metaxourgeio, Athens

Κunsthalle Athena has the honour to host “Bring your own beamer” (BYOB) event, an “exemplary” and crucial gesture supporting creative expression in a period of financial, social and cultural crisis.

“Bring your own beamer” (BYOB) exhibition comprises an edition of a broader set of events organised by different artists in different cities every time. In every occasion the organisers choose the participating artists with the aim to experiment and discover “what will occur in site when it is filled with moving light”.

In this special evening, under the acronym BYOB (a symbolic reference to bring your own booze parties), artists are invited to bring their own beamer and present any work they choose in any place they desire to. It is a case of “presenting” moving images and performances in a DIY context, expected to evolve organically in progress of the evening. Therefore, a significant aspect of BYOB’s concept is to be realized without the financial support of any third parties beyond the immediate participants.

The first BYOB event was held with great success in Büro Friedrich, Berlin with the initiative of Rafaël Rozendaal and Anne de Vries. Now, curated by Angelo Plessas, BYOB makes its second worldwide appearance in Kunsthalle Athena. All the artists will attend the event, even those who are not based in Athens, so you are welcomed to contact them. Complementary to the event and during the night a joined performance will take place by artist Angelo Plessas and japanese artist Mai Ueda followed by DJ sets from Amateur Boys and Emile Zile.

ADACHI Tomomi + Jaap BLONK • Steim, Amsterdam

http://www.steim.org/STEIMBLOG/?p=871

the brutal immediacy of the voice, the ability it has to inspire fleeting recollections of forgotten characters

it’s animalistic sonic attack, the elemental nature of a cry

inherently humorous and intimate

both performers began their solo sets with renditions of dada and futurist sound poems from their respective countries, the transportation of voices through epochs… return to the voice, to the first and last gasp, the formless expulsion of air and communication
